Nfl McAfee reacts to Super Bowl: Only thing the Chiefs won was the coin toss Pat McAfee says that the only thing that the Chiefs won Sunday - the coin toss - was something he lost a wager on. The coin toss rule change of 2008 has affected the Super Bowl as well. Since the rule was implemented, nine out of the 10 teams chose to defer and take possession in the second half. The only team not to select this option was the New Orleans Saints in 2009.
They say tails never fails. But this might not always be the best betting strategy.
The Super Bowl coin toss is a major event in the game's lineup of festivities. The spectacle is the most popular prop bet, as bettors love putting money on the straightforward heads/tails odds and outcome.
At least, it seems straightforward. It only takes a couple of seconds and there are few variables involved. And the line doesn't change at all in the middle of it. You can't exactly place an in-toss bet. But maybe there is some strategy to wagering on the toss ahead of this Kansas City Chiefs-Tampa Bay Buccaneers matchup.

Here are the facts about Super Bowl LV's coin toss we know so far: It was announced last week that educator Trimaine Davis, nurse manager Suzie Dorner, and Marine veteran James Martin will take part in the toss. Odds for the toss, as of Wednesday, sit at an even -103, per FanDuel Sportsbook. So what goes into placing your bet on this most popular prop?
Let's start with looking at the stats: In Super Bowl history, the toss has come up heads 25 times, or 47 percent of time, and tails 29 times, or 53 percent of time. So it's not that tails never fails, it just succeeds a little bit more often than it fails. For instance, the longest streak is heads five years in a row. The longest tails streak is four.
Also, fun fact: The Dallas Cowboys have the most coin toss wins with six.
A huge bet came in this week on the toss and, boy, does this bettor want us to know how much money he or she has to throw around.

-- Greg Pallone (@gpallone13) February 1, 2021In his Super Bowl career, Brady has won only two coin tosses, in Super Bowls XLVI and LII. And those were both heads. And the only two coin tosses Brady's team has lost that came up heads were in Super Bowls XXXVI and LIII. All other toss losses have been tails. However, in both the games Brady and the Patriots won the coin toss, they lost the game. So if Brady wins the toss, look out Bucs bettors.
As for Mahomes, his one Super Bowl appearance (and win) last year came after a tails coin toss loss. Both of these quarterbacks' teams seem partial to picking heads.
Personally, I am also more likely to go with heads in this one. But I'm more interested in the Buccaneers losing the toss because, as history has shown us, Brady has more success after losing the coin flip.

To make your pick, you can look at the trends, the stats, the wind direction for Sunday night in Tampa Bay (which is supposed to be east at 9 mph, for what it's worth), or just pick a side randomly. But either way, gravity will do its thing and bettors will know in a matter of seconds whether or not they won this prop.
