How Do Ufc Odds Work

Watching the UFC, the odds format they talk is American Odds or Vegas Odds. Essentially what they are is the percentage of one outcome against another. You can use our UFC Odds Calculator to work out percentages yourself. Welcome to the Sports Betting Odds section of The Sports Geek. If you are new to sports betting and don’t understand how to read betting odds (+150, -110, +2200, etc) we will lay it all out for you and help you learn how the betting odds work.

MMA continues to gain followers around the world, something that has caused the hunger for the UFC to also be in a clear positive trend along with other promotions such as Bellator, WSOF or Invicta. In addition, the appearances of stars of the stature of Conor McGregor or Brock Lesnar have helped (and continue to help) that growth does not stop.

In mixed martial arts, the most recognized type of bet is the Winner Bets . Basically, your task is to select the fighter who you think will win the fight, and for this the sports betting houses offer odds to differentiate the favorite from the underdog. As in other sports such as baseball, the favorite usually has a negative value in its share , while the underdog has a positive share value.

This would be an example of Winner Bets for the UFC:

Conor McGregor -160

Eddie Alvarez +140

McGregor would be the favorite for this match, and to make a profit of $ 100 you would have to invest $ 160, which would make a total payout of $ 260. The fact that he is the favorite means that bettors do not hesitate to risk more money on their bets.

If you bet on Alvarez, you would have to bet $ 100 to collect $ 140 of winnings, which results in payouts of $ 140.

In short, to obtain greater profits by betting on the favorite you must invest a higher sum of money, always bearing in mind that the success percentage is also higher than if you bet on the underdog.

Over / Under bets for the UFC

Sports bookmakers also offer Over / Under bets , and they are very similar to what you can find for other sports such as soccer and basketball. In MMA, online bookmakers place a total, usually 1.5 rounds for three-round fights and 2.5 rounds for five-round fights, and your job is to guess if the fight will close in more or less rounds than those proposed by the bookmaker.

Thus, if you think McGregor will beat Alvarez in the first round, you should bet for Under 2.5. If Alvarez holds out until the third round, regardless of whether he wins or loses the fight, you would lose your bet.

Other markets that also tend to have a large share of prominence in MMA are those present in Parallel Bets . In this case we are talking about bets more focused on fun and that do not have to directly affect the outcome of the event. If in the Super Bowl you find odds for events such as the side on which the coin will fall in the initial draw or the duration of the national anthem, in MMA you can also bet on events of this type.

My favorite sport to bet on used to be boxing, but now I prefer betting on MMA events – especially UFC matches. The UFC is an adrenaline rush for any sports bettor.

I have a buddy who spends some time betting on some of the less well known mixed martial arts organizations, but I stick with The Ultimate Fighting Championship. It’s the biggest and best organization in MMA.

I take the same approach when I’m betting football, by the way.

I don’t waste time gambling on the XFL when I could be focusing on NFL bets.

Here’s an explanation of how to bet on and win your bets on UFC matches.

Understand the Types of UFC Bets Available

One way to bet on the UFC is to just ask the guy sitting on the barstool next to you if he wants to put $20 (or $50 or $100) on who’s going to win the match that you’re watching.

That’s a GREAT way to bet on the UFC, by the way, because if you’re better educated about the sport than your buddy, you can get an edge just by choosing the favorite and betting $100 to win $100.

Most bettors, though, will be looking to put more money into action and will be dealing with a bookmaker or online sportsbooks with odds on the UFC.

You’re not limited to just betting on who’s going to win, either.

Being conversant with your options will help you find value when deciding which bet to make.

Be selective about which bets you decide to place. Some people bet on MMA and UFC professionally, and the one thing they all have in common is that they choose their bets carefully.

The Match Bet

The match bet, or “moneyline” bet, is still the most common UFC bet you can place. It’s also the most popular UFC bet. When you make this bet, you’re just picking the winner of the fight.

Here’s how a match bet works:

Conor McGregor is fighting Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. If you bet that Conor McGregor will win, all he has to do is win, and you win your bet. If you bet on McGregor, and Cerrone wins, you lose your bet.

With a match bet, it doesn’t matter how one fighter defeats the other. As long as you pick the winner, you win.

But it does get more complicated, because the bets don’t necessarily pay out the same.

In other words, most of the time, you don’t just bet $100 and either lose or win $100.

One of the fighters is always a favorite, and the payout amounts reflect that.

That’s one of the reasons this is called a “moneyline” bet. The money line is just the amount you’ll win if your fighter wins.

You can tell who the favorite and who the dog are by looking at the money line.

And the money line can be expressed in 3 different ways:

  1. American odds
  2. Decimal odds
  3. Fractional odds

Something else that’s important to know about the money line is that it can change over time. The books do this so that they don’t wind up with enough money on one side of a match that they would show a huge loss if there were an upset.

How American Odds Work When Betting on the UFC

I’m writing for a largely American audience, so I’m going to explain how American odds work when you’re betting on the UFC. American odds are easy to understand.

American odds are always based on winning or losing $100.

When you look at the money line on a sports book website, one of the fighters will have a + by his odds and the other will have a – by his odds.

Here’s an example:

  • Donald Cerrone +255
  • Conor McGregor -335

The fighter with the – next to his number is the favorite. The number represents how much you’ll have to bet to win $100.

In the example above, you’d have to wager $335 to win $100 if you want to bet on Conor McGregor to win.

The fighter with the + next to his number is the underdog. The number represents how much you’ll win if you bet $100.

Ufc Odds Explained

In the example above, if you bet $100 on Donald Cerrone, and he wins, you win $255.

Ufc Odds Meaning

The book’s goal is to get 50% of their bettors money on one side of the match, and 50% of their bettors on the other side of the match. They include an inequity in those odds to make sure they make a profit.

The losing bets bring in enough money to pay off the winner, plus they make a profit on top of that, and vice versa.

How Decimal Odds Work when Betting on the UFC

Some people think decimal odds are easier to understand, but I disagree. At any rate, in case you prefer that format, here’s how decimal odds work:

You multiple your stake by the decimal to determine how much money you’ll win if you pick right.

You might have odds of 3.55 on Donald Cerrone. If you bet $100 and win, you get $355 back. (This includes your $100 bet, so your actual winnings are $255.)

If you have odds of 1.28 on Connor McGregor, a bet of $100 would pay off at $128. (You’d show a $28 profit.)

McGregor is clearly still the favorite using these odds.

The vig is built into decimal odds, too.

How Fractional Odds Work when Betting on the UFC

Fractional odds are the most popular format in Ireland and the UK. Once you understand how fractional odds work, they’re not hard, either.

You might have already gathered this from the name, but fractional odds are just odds expressed as a fraction, with a numerator and a denominator.

In the fraction 3/4, 3 is the numerator, and 4 is the denominator.

The denominator represents the amount that you bet, and the numerator is the amount you’ll win.

In the example above, if you bet $4 and won, you’d get $3 in profit.

Since it’s a ratio, you can multiply it out. If you want to bet $200, you’d win $150. ($200 is 4 multiplied by 50, so you’d multiply the 3 by 50 to get the amount won.)

Fractional odds are also sometimes called “UK odds.”

A bet on Conor McGregor at 3/10 odds means that you’d win $300 profit if you bet $1000 on the fighter.

And a bet on Conor McGregor at 5/2 odds means that you’d win $500 profit if you bet $200 on the fighter.

Over Under Round Bets and Prop Bets

The 2nd most popular kind of bet on a UFC match is the over under round bet. This is a bet on which round you think the fight will finish in.

You’re betting on a 3-round UFC fight, and the over/under is 2.5 rounds.

You can bet that the fight will finish before the mid-point of the 2nd round, or you can bet that the fight will finish after the mid-point of the 2nd round.

The type of victory doesn’t matter – just when the fight ends.

A “prop” bet is a bet on some other proposition than who will win and/or when. A “victory” bet is a type of prop bet that’s popular among UFC bettors.

The victory bet is a bet on HOW the fight ends.

You can bet that a UFC fighter will win in one of the following 3 ways:

  1. KO – A KO is a knockout.
  2. Points – Points is how well the judges score the fighter.
  3. Submission – Submission is the act of tapping out or surrendering.

How to Win Your UFC Bets

Being an educated bettor is the key to winning when betting on UFC events. Here are some things to pay attention to:

  1. Do you have any kind of personal reason for placing an irrational bet?
  2. What kind of environment are you betting on?
  3. What kind of shape are the fighters in?

Mma Odds

The first tip on this list might be the most important. Some people bet on fighters because they like them. That’s not a good reason to put a significant amount of money in action on a fighter – at least, not if you want to win money.

Also, with MMA fights, the size of the cage can vary.

Some fighters do better in bigger cages than smaller cages and vice versa.

Educate yourself about this before placing a bet.

Finally, think about the fighters and what kind of shape they’re in. How much does each fighter weigh? What kind of reach does one fighter have over the other? How old are the fighters in comparison to each other?

Learning how to bet on UFC matches isn’t hard. The most important first step is learning how the various odds work.

Learning how to win those bets is what separates the boys from the men. This will take time and experience, and the examples of things I suggest you watch out for barely scratch the surface of what it takes to be a consistently winning UFC bettor.
